The Monday after US Thanksgiving weekend was coined by retail marketers in the mid-2000s as an online-shopping-focused counterpart to Black Friday, capitalizing on the observation that many people returned to office internet connections (faster than typical home connections at the time) after the holiday weekend.
It inherits the same calendar volatility as Black Friday, since both are pegged to Thanksgiving's own fourth-Thursday rule rather than a fixed date.
Online sales on the day have grown to regularly exceed $10 billion in the US alone in recent years, and the distinction between it and Black Friday's own now-substantial online sales has blurred considerably since the term was first coined.
The event has since spread beyond the US, with several other countries adopting their own Cyber Monday-style online shopping promotions timed to their own regional shopping calendars rather than the US Thanksgiving date.
