The US observance is statutorily the third Sunday in June, taking decades longer to gain the same formal federal recognition as Mother's Day — it wasn't signed into permanent US law until 1972, despite early advocacy dating back to the 1910s.
Several other countries mark Father's Day on this same third-Sunday-of-June date by cultural convergence with the US observance, though a number of others (including much of Catholic Europe) instead tie their Father's Day to the March 19 feast of Saint Joseph.
US President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring the day in 1966, though it took a further six years and President Richard Nixon's 1972 signature for the observance to become permanent federal law.
Sonora Smart Dodd is widely credited as the driving advocate behind the earliest Father's Day observances in the 1910s, inspired by her own father, a single parent who raised six children after his wife's death.
