About International Day of Yoga
June 21 was proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a 2014 UN address and was adopted by the UN General Assembly the same year with a record number of co-sponsoring countries, first observed in 2015.
The date was specifically chosen because it's the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and has particular significance in various Indian traditions as one of the longer days of the year.
The inaugural 2015 observance in New Delhi drew a Guinness World Record-setting mass yoga session with tens of thousands of participants, an event widely covered as emblematic of the day's rapid, government-backed global adoption.
The word "yoga" derives from a Sanskrit root meaning "to yoke" or "unite," reflecting the practice's traditional emphasis on unifying body, mind, and spirit rather than purely physical exercise.
