March 14 is celebrated because, written in the US month/day date format, it reads 3/14 — matching the first three digits of the mathematical constant π (pi), approximately 3.14159.

It's popular in schools and among math enthusiasts, and coincidentally also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology has historically mailed its admissions decisions to arrive on or near March 14, a deliberate nod by the university to the date's mathematical significance.

The Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco held what's widely credited as the first organized Pi Day celebration in 1988, originated by physicist Larry Shaw.

The digits of pi have been calculated to trillions of decimal places using modern supercomputers, a computation with no serious practical need beyond that point but pursued partly as a benchmark test of computing power.
