About Safer Internet Day (reference)
Observed the second Tuesday of February, Safer Internet Day originated in Europe in 2004 as part of the EU's SafeBorders project and has since expanded to be marked in over 100 countries, coordinated internationally by the Insafe network.
The day promotes safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile devices, particularly among children and young people, and features educational campaigns worldwide.
The Insafe network coordinating the observance is made up of dozens of national internet-safety awareness centers, primarily across Europe, though the day's messaging and campaigns are now used well beyond that region.
The EU's SafeBorders project that originated the day was specifically focused on protecting children from harmful online content, a founding focus the day's messaging has retained even as it expanded to a much broader international audience.
