Observed on the last Friday of July, System Administrator Appreciation Day was founded in 1999 by system administrator Ted Kekatos, inspired by seeing a coworker go to unusual lengths to help colleagues with a technology problem.
It has since become an informally but widely recognized occasion in IT workplaces internationally for recognizing the work of system administrators, who often operate behind the scenes of an organization's technology infrastructure.
The observance has since spread informally to numerous countries' IT departments and has occasionally been marked with small workplace gestures like gift cards or catered lunches, akin to (though far less commercially developed than) Administrative Professionals' Day.
Ted Kekatos has said in interviews he was inspired after watching a system administrator go to extraordinary lengths, including personally driving to a store, to fix a colleague's problem outside normal business hours.
