October 4 was chosen because it's the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology in the Catholic tradition, and the observance dates back to a 1931 convention of ecologists in Florence, Italy.

It's marked internationally by animal welfare organizations with events promoting animal rights and welfare, and improving standards of animal treatment worldwide.

The observance has grown well beyond its original Italian conservationist roots and is now marked by shelters, zoos, and welfare organizations across dozens of countries with adoption drives and awareness events.

The Italian ecologists' 1931 Florence convention that founded the observance predates most of the UN-system environmental days on this list by several decades, making it one of the older continuously observed dates here.

Saint Francis of Assisi is also the namesake of numerous animal shelters and blessing-of-the-animals ceremonies held in Catholic parishes around the same October date, extending the observance's religious roots into a widely secular animal-welfare context.
