About World Environment Day

The UN General Assembly's 1972 resolution establishing June 5 coincided with the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment that same year — one of the first major international conferences focused specifically on environmental issues.

It has since grown into the largest UN day for environmental awareness and action, with a different host country and thematic focus each year.

The 1972 Stockholm Conference the day commemorates also led directly to the creation of the UN Environment Programme later that same year, giving the observance a direct institutional legacy beyond the day itself.

The day's host country changes annually, with past hosts ranging from Kenya to China to Pakistan, each shaping that year's specific environmental theme around a locally relevant issue.

The day has occasionally been credited with catalyzing specific national environmental policy announcements, since host governments frequently time major domestic environmental initiatives to coincide with hosting that year's observance.
