What Day Was the atomic bombing of Hiroshima?
the atomic bombing of Hiroshima
About this date
The United States dropped an atomic bomb, nicknamed "Little Boy," on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare, killing tens of thousands of people immediately with tens of thousands more dying later from injuries and radiation exposure.
The bombing came after the Allies' Potsdam Declaration demanding Japan's unconditional surrender had been rejected, and it was followed three days later by a second atomic bombing of Nagasaki.
Japan announced its surrender roughly a week after the second bombing, bringing World War II to its final end after both atomic attacks and the Soviet Union's entry into the Pacific war.
The city's Genbaku Dome, one of the few structures left standing near the blast's hypocenter, was later preserved as a memorial and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
