Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970, organized by US Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin as a nationwide environmental teach-in following the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill.
Denis Hayes, a young organizer recruited by Senator Nelson, coordinated the sprawling first Earth Day nationally while still a graduate student, later going on to lead environmental organizations for decades.
Corporate and nonprofit environmental campaigns now widely time major announcements and product launches to coincide with the date each year.
