Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington is credited with organizing the first Father's Day observance in 1910, inspired by her own father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone.
An earlier, less successful push for a Father's Day observance came from a 1908 West Virginia church service, held before Dodd's better-known Spokane event and largely forgotten by the time the holiday caught on nationally.
